What is CourseWing?
An AI tutor that connects to a student's Google Classroom or Canvas courses and helps them with their real assignments, while teachers get session receipts and set how much help the tutor gives.
How much does it cost?
Nothing. CourseWing is free for students, teachers and schools during the beta. See the pricing page.
Which learning platforms does it work with?
Google Classroom and Canvas. Students connect their own account; the connection is read-only.
Does CourseWing do students' homework for them?
No. On graded work the tutor helps students do the work themselves: it explains concepts, works similar examples and checks their steps. Teachers set the help level for each assignment.
What can teachers see?
Session receipts that summarize what was practiced and where the student got stuck, written without quoting the student. A teacher can open an excerpt of a conversation only when a session is flagged, and every unlock is logged. Details are on the safety & privacy page.
What are the help levels?
Open explains anything fully, including worked solutions on practice material. Guided gives generous explanations and worked examples but never finished essays, homework answers or take-home solutions. Socratic leads with questions and hints and reveals steps only after the student tries.
Which AI model does CourseWing use?
CourseWing runs on Claude by Anthropic. We test the tutor against a 36-case evaluation across Claude models; results are on the research page.
Is student data used to train AI?
No. We don't use student data to train AI models, and we don't sell personal information or use it for advertising.
Does CourseWing access Google Drive?
No. We only request read-only Google Classroom access.
Can students use it without their school signing up?
Yes. Students can create an account and connect their own Google Classroom or Canvas account. Students under 13 need a school that has authorized CourseWing.
How do I connect Canvas?
Search for your school, then create an access token in your Canvas account settings and paste it in. Step-by-step instructions are in the help center.
Can I try it without connecting a class?
Yes. During onboarding you can choose demo data and explore with a sample student's courses.
How do I delete my account?
Email us and we'll delete your account and its data. You can also disconnect Google Classroom or Canvas at any time in settings.
