This policy covers coursewing.org and the CourseWing app at app.coursewing.org (together, "CourseWing"), operated by CourseWing LLC ("we", "us"). Questions go to saaj@coursewing.org.
Information we collect
- Account information: your name, email address and password, or your Google account name and email if you sign in with Google.
- Course information you connect: when you connect Google Classroom or Canvas, we read your courses, assignments, due dates, announcements, course materials, rubrics, grades, teacher feedback and the work you submitted. The connection is read-only, and we never request access to Google Drive.
- Conversations and learning data: the messages you exchange with the tutor, the memory the tutor keeps about your goals and study habits, and session receipts summarizing each session.
- Teacher settings: help levels, course settings and activity in the teacher console.
- Demo requests: the name, email, role, school and message you enter in the demo form on coursewing.org.
- Website analytics: coursewing.org uses Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site. It collects device, browser and page-visit information through cookies.
How we use information
- To run the tutor: answering questions from your course materials, applying your teacher's help level, and remembering preferences you let it keep.
- To give teachers the views described on our safety & privacy page: session receipts, the class pulse, student profiles built from receipts, and excerpts of flagged sessions.
- To keep CourseWing secure, fix problems and improve the product.
- To reply to demo requests and messages you send us.
We do not sell personal information, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not use student data to train AI models.
What teachers can see
Teachers see session receipts, which summarize the topic, strengths and struggles of a session without quoting the student. A teacher can open an excerpt of a conversation only when a session is flagged, and every unlock is recorded. The class assistant sees summaries only and cannot read conversations.
Service providers
We share information only with providers that help us run CourseWing, and only as needed for that purpose:
- Anthropic, directly and through Amazon Web Services, which provide the Claude AI models that generate tutor replies and session receipts.
- Microsoft Azure, which hosts the CourseWing app and its database.
- Cloudflare, which serves coursewing.org and stores demo requests.
- Google, for Google sign-in, the Google Classroom connection and website analytics.
- Instructure, the maker of Canvas, when you connect a Canvas account.
We may also disclose information when required by law, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.
Google user data
CourseWing's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We use Google Classroom data only to provide and improve the tutoring features you see, and we do not use it for advertising or transfer it to others except as described in this policy.
Students and schools
CourseWing is built for high school and college students. Students under 13 may use CourseWing only through a school that has authorized its use. When a school or teacher provides CourseWing to students, we process student information on the school's behalf and only for the school's educational purposes.
Your choices
- You can view, edit or delete anything the tutor remembers about you in the app.
- You can disconnect Google Classroom or Canvas at any time in your settings.
- You can ask us to access, correct or delete your account and its data by emailing saaj@coursewing.org. Parents and schools can make these requests on a student's behalf.
Retention and security
We keep information while your account is active. When you ask us to delete your account, we delete its data, except where we must keep it to comply with law. We use access controls and encrypted connections to protect information, but no system is perfectly secure.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the effective date above and, for significant changes, notify users in the app.
