We started CourseWing because personal tutoring shouldn't depend on what a family can pay. A great tutor knows the class: the assignment, the rubric, the last quiz. So we built one that does.
From a first prototype to a live product used in a university program, in one summer.
The first version connected to Canvas and answered from a student's real assignments, due dates, rubrics and grades, citing where every answer came from.
The tutor went into production alongside the teacher console: session receipts, a class pulse, a review queue for flagged sessions, and help levels teachers set per assignment.
We published a read-only Google Classroom integration and added a guided onboarding flow, so a student can connect their courses and start studying in minutes.
75 students and teachers ran 513 tutoring sessions and 2,647 messages through CourseWing. Every session ended in a receipt.
We incorporated to bring CourseWing to more schools.
Our 36-case tutoring evaluation now runs on the latest Claude models. Claude Opus 5.5 passed all 36. See the research
A tutor is most useful when it knows what was assigned, how it will be graded, and where the student slipped last time.
The tutor guides students through their own work. Research shows unguarded answer-giving hurts exam results, so we test for it.
Teachers set how much help the tutor gives and see clear evidence of struggle and mastery, while student conversations stay private.
