AI policy
How we use AI, and the rules we hold ourselves to.
The models we use
CourseWing's tutor and session receipts run on Claude models by Anthropic, provided directly by Anthropic and through Amazon Web Services.
What the AI sees
The tutor sees the conversation and looks up the course information it needs to answer: assignments, due dates, materials, rubrics, grades and feedback from the student's connected classes.
Teachers stay in control
Teachers set the help level for each course and assignment, and the server applies it to every message. Sessions that look like answer-seeking on graded work are flagged for the teacher.
Learning comes first
On graded work, the tutor helps students do the work themselves. We test this with a 36-case evaluation and publish the results on our research page.
No training on student data
We don't use student data to train AI models.
Limits
AI can be wrong. The tutor cites the course materials it used so students can check, and CourseWing doesn't grade work or replace a teacher's judgment.
Reporting a problem
If the tutor says something wrong or inappropriate, email saaj@coursewing.org.
