Why our LMS connection is read-only
CourseWing reads Google Classroom and Canvas and writes nothing back. Here's why we made that choice.
A tutor needs to know what's due, how it will be graded and how the student did last time. It doesn't need to change anything in the gradebook.
What we read
Courses, assignments, due dates, announcements, course materials, rubrics, grades, teacher feedback and submitted work. A sync service keeps a copy up to date and indexes course files for search, so the tutor can answer from the real material.
What we don't
We never submit, grade or post anything. For Google Classroom we request only read-only Classroom scopes, and we don't request Google Drive at all.
Why it matters
Read-only access keeps the blast radius small: the worst a bug can do is show stale information, never change a grade. It also makes the conversation with schools simpler, because the permissions say exactly what we do.
