CourseWing's first summer
How a course-aware tutor went from first prototype to a live product in one summer.
CourseWing started with a simple frustration: AI tutors didn't know the class. They couldn't see the assignment, the rubric or last week's quiz, so students spent half their time explaining context.
July: the first version
The first prototype connected to Canvas and answered from real assignments and grades. Within weeks it was live at app.coursewing.org, with a teacher console for receipts and help levels.
Google Classroom and onboarding
Many schools run on Google Classroom, so we added a read-only Classroom connection and a guided onboarding flow that gets a student from sign-up to synced courses in minutes.
A real classroom
In the Carnegie Mellon pilot, 75 students and teachers ran 513 tutoring sessions and 2,647 messages through CourseWing.
August and beyond
We incorporated CourseWing LLC in August and kept testing the tutor against our evaluation suite. Next we're working on turning receipts into active evidence of learning, like short retrieval checks timed to each class's exams.
